Formal Recruitment is a structured form of recruitment (formerly known as "rush") that is coordinated by the National Panhellenic Council on campus. It takes place at the start of each semester and involves five nights of events. One event takes place each evening. During these events, potential new members get the opportunity to meet sisters and learn about each sorority.
It is considered formal because of the uniform structure sororities are required to abide by as designated by the National Panhellenic Council and Assistant Director for Fraternity & Sorority Life.

There are five events, one each evening, that last for equal and specific lengths of time, typically beginning on a Monday and ending on a Friday. Monday's event is an informational that expands on what the National Panhellenic Council is and why you should join, with introductions from the Assistant Director for Fraternity & Sorority Life, Kimberly Stokely, as well as the President and National Panhellenic Council Representative from each sorority. The next two events, Tuesday and Wednesday, are attended in rounds; there are three rounds hosted privately by each sorority within each event to allow potential new members to attend every sorority's presentation. Their themes, respectively, are Recruitment Theme Night and Philanthropy Night. The fourth evening, Thursday, is a special, invitation-only event known as Preference Night. Preference Night is the only evening with a dress code - if you are invited, please attend in dressy casual attire. Friday is the final evening (which is also invitation-only); bids will be extended and new members will be welcomed by their new chapters with a celebration!

Formal Recruitment is the best option for girls who want to join a nationally-recognized sorority, but aren't sure which sorority. It also is able to give participants an idea of sorority-life on campus, converse with many sisters, and understand each sororities' motivation and sisterhood better.
